The History of Rolex Submariner

In 1953, Rolex Submariner had its first show and was designated as representative to attended Basel Watch Fair in 1954.

In 1955, Rolex Submairiner Ref.6205 and Ref.6204 has slight difference and at the same year, Ref.6200 was produced. Great difference has shown in the Ref.6200 from 1953 to 1957 because it has a 3-6-9 number indexes in its bidirectional bezel. And outside the bezel, no time scale was seen so that hand and indexed can stretch to its best length and make it show more clear and easy to be read. Ref.6200, which got a 200 meters depth of water-resistance, not only has a bit crown of 8 mm in diameter, but also make it easier to do the maintenance.

In 1956, Rolex released Ref.6536 and Ref.6538. Two of them are fitted with Cal.A260 but sooner, Cal.A260 was replaced by Cal.1030. Bubble-floating case back is shown in Ref.6538 . Another type, Ref.6538A is fitted with a big crown of 8 mm in diameter and Cal.1030. Both of them has 220 meters of water-resistance depth while Ref.6536(sooner changed into Ref.6536/1,Cal.1030) reached 110 meters. It has to be mentioned that some types of Ref.6538 has got certification from C.O.S.C.

Rolex Submariner first appeared in James Bond.

In the first 007 Dr.No, what James Bond wore is just Rolex Submariner Ref.6538, so people also name it James Bond watch.

In 1960, Ref.5512 was rolled out. It has a crown of 7 mm in diameter, a Cal.1530 movements and two back plates guard the crown from two sides, which has passed the certification C.O.S.C.

In 1962, Ref.5513, as the twin brother of Ref.5512, was created.

From 1970 to 1989, matt dial has been gradually replaced by slippery dial and is equipped with metal bezel.

In 1965, the first Submariner, Ref.1680, that had Date display, was released.

From 1969 to 1975, SUBMARINER, the logo, on the dial was replaced by red color released on the market. From 1986 to 1989, sapphire crystal was adopted on Ref.16800 and is fitted with Cal.3035.

Time moves to 1988 when Rolex Submariner Date fitted with a Cal.3135 movement changed its name into Ref.16610 and the other Rolex Submariner were named after Ref.14060. Then 2003 witnessed 116610 LV, the 50 anniversary limited edition made by Rolex in collaboration with LV.
